Devlog - Tutorials

Tutorials! Something we've had to revisit a number of times is how we teach things to players, both players who are familiar with PC games and people who may be learning for the first time. Partly due to new features being added with additional controls, and partly based on player feedback, we've gone through a number of iterations.

One thing we always want to keep in mind with our tutorials is giving players freedom. The balance is that we have to teach new players all of the core functionality of the game, and to do so we need to force them to interact with objects in a specific way. With our newest set of tutorials, the compromise that we came to was to allow players freedom within the scope of one mechanic. While they are learning to drag objects, they will be able to throw them as far as they want. When learning to traverse stations, they will be given options and goals beyond just moving around. We hope that by giving meaning and variation to each step of the tutorial, players will enjoy it more, learn more from it, and be less likely to instantly smack that Skip Tutorial button.

As a sneak peak into our next build, we've got more coming than just tutorials changes. We are taking a look at player progression as a whole, so be ready for some new goals, new achievements, and some helpful new quality of life features for new and returning players alike.
